Methacrylic anhydride | CAS 760-93-0

A methacryloylating reagent for introducing polymerizable functionality into material precursors, with inhibitor content and anhydride integrity central to selection.

CAS760-93-0
Molecular formulaC8H10O3
Molecular weight154.16 g/mol

Product overview

Methacrylic anhydride combines an acylating anhydride group with two carbon–carbon double bonds. This combination makes it useful when a material precursor must acquire methacrylate functionality for subsequent polymerization. Qualification should distinguish intact anhydride from methacrylic acid and confirm the stabilizer package, since a nominal purity value alone does not describe storage stability or suitability for a particular formulation.

Application context

Supplier technical literature identifies methacrylic anhydride as a precursor for dental materials. More generally, its role is at the functionalization stage: reaction with suitable hydroxyl or amino groups introduces methacryloyl functionality into a selected substrate. The resulting derivative, its degree of substitution and the final curing formulation determine material behavior. A raw reagent specification therefore needs to address both acylating content and compatibility of its inhibitor with the intended downstream process.

Chemistry and synthetic role

The anhydride linkage is moisture-reactive, while the methacryloyl double bonds provide polymerization sites. Hydrolysis and premature polymerization represent different routes of quality change.

Quality review

Stabilizer package

Specify inhibitor identity and concentration range appropriate to the planned polymerization process.

Anhydride versus free acid

Agree an assay and a separate free-acid or hydrolysis-product limit where reaction stoichiometry requires it.

Oligomers and water

Review water and nonvolatile or oligomeric material using methods suitable for a reactive anhydride.

Preparing a specification

State anhydride assay, free-acid criterion, inhibitor identity and level, and any water or nonvolatile-residue limits required by the functionalization process.

Packaging and storage

Confirm container compatibility, closure and net weight for the selected grade and destination. Follow the actual supplier SDS and batch label for storage and transport.

Documentation

Request the batch COA, SDS and analytical methods covering the agreed purchasing specification. Confirm which supporting chromatograms and application-specific records are available from the selected manufacturer.

Procurement questions

Is it a finished dental resin?

No. It is a reagent used to prepare material precursors; the formulated resin is a separate product.

Does every grade use the same inhibitor?

Do not assume this. Confirm the inhibitor and its declared concentration for the proposed grade.

Can acid content replace anhydride assay?

No. Free methacrylic acid and intact anhydride have different acylating behavior.
