2,5-Dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMTD) | CAS 1072-71-5

A sulfur-rich heterocycle used in metal-deactivator and corrosion-inhibitor chemistry, with grade selection governed by chemical form and compatibility with the fluid system.

Product overview

DMTD contains a 1,3,4-thiadiazole ring with sulfur functionality at both carbon positions. It serves both as an additive and as a precursor to substituted thiadiazole products. The parent compound, its salts and modified derivatives should be specified separately: their behavior in water-based and petroleum-based formulations is not interchangeable. Oxidation products and the active-content basis deserve attention during lot qualification.

Application context

DMTD is used in corrosion inhibition, metal deactivation and preparation of thiadiazole derivatives for lubricant and metalworking-fluid applications. The parent material has limited solubility in petroleum base stocks, so carrier compatibility and any intended derivatization are practical selection issues. Qualification should use the actual base fluid and additive package; a sulfur assay alone cannot establish the chemical form or the performance of a finished formulation.

Chemistry and synthetic role

The two sulfur-bearing sites can participate in salt formation or derivatization. Oxidative coupling changes the molecular species and should be distinguished from the parent DMTD.

Quality review

Parent, salt or derivative

Specify free DMTD rather than an unspecified thiadiazole additive package.

Oxidation products

Use a method that can distinguish parent compound from coupled sulfur species.

Fluid compatibility

Assess solubility or dispersion in the selected carrier, together with water and insoluble residue where relevant.

Preparing a specification

State free DMTD identity, active assay, related sulfur-species limits and the intended carrier; add water and insoluble-residue criteria as the formulation requires.

Packaging and storage

Confirm container compatibility, closure and net weight for the selected grade and destination. Follow the actual supplier SDS and batch label for storage and transport.

Documentation

Request the batch COA, SDS and analytical methods covering the agreed purchasing specification. Confirm which supporting chromatograms and application-specific records are available from the selected manufacturer.

Procurement questions

Is DMTD automatically oil soluble?

The parent compound has limited solubility in petroleum base stocks; evaluate the chosen carrier.

Can total sulfur establish DMTD purity?

No. Related sulfur compounds can contribute to the same measurement.

Are salts interchangeable with free DMTD?

Their formulation behavior differs, so identify the required chemical form explicitly.
