N-Benzylethanolamine | CAS 104-63-2

A secondary amino alcohol with a retained N-benzyl group, used in published oxazolidine and oxygen–nitrogen heterocycle synthesis where both the amino and hydroxyl functions define the downstream ring structure.

Product overview

Two reactive functions distinguish N-benzylethanolamine: a secondary amine and a primary alcohol joined by a two-carbon chain. The benzyl group is attached to nitrogen, leaving the hydroxyl available for subsequent transformations. This arrangement supports ring construction through both heteroatoms, including oxazolidines described in moisture-curing polyurethane patents. It also appears in routes to benzyl-substituted oxygen–nitrogen heterocycles. For procurement, the identity of the N-benzyl structure matters as much as the total amine content. Residual ethanolamine, more highly substituted amines and water should be considered according to the selected reaction and its analytical requirements.

Application context

In published polyurethane development, N-benzylethanolamine reacts with an aldehyde to form an oxazolidine precursor for moisture-curing compositions. One patent example combines it with benzaldehyde to obtain a benzyl-substituted oxazolidine. A separate patent describes its use in constructing 4-benzyl-2-hydroxy-1,4-oxazin-3-one, illustrating the role of the same amino-alcohol chain in a larger heterocycle. These applications depend on the coexistence of a secondary N–H group and a free hydroxyl. Buyers evaluating it for cyclic adduct synthesis should therefore define other amino-alcohol components and water alongside chromatographic purity.

Chemistry and synthetic role

The HOCH2CH2NHCH2Ph structure contains a secondary N–H group and a primary alcohol. Condensation with an aldehyde can link nitrogen and oxygen through a new carbon to form an oxazolidine ring.

Quality review

Verify N-benzyl connectivity

Confirm that benzyl substitution is on nitrogen and that the hydroxyl is free.

Separate amine impurities

Review ethanolamine and differently substituted amines where relevant to the manufacturing route.

Control water for condensation

Agree water content and its test method when the intended use involves aldehyde condensation.

Preparing a specification

Specify N-benzylethanolamine with free hydroxyl, chromatographic assay, relevant amino-alcohol impurities and a water limit suited to ring-forming condensation.

Packaging and storage

Packaging and net weight are agreed for the selected grade, order quantity and destination. Check the actual supplier SDS and label for storage and transport requirements.

Documentation

Request a batch COA, SDS and the analytical methods for the acceptance criteria below. Confirm which supporting chromatograms and identity data are available from the selected manufacturer.

Procurement questions

Is O-benzylethanolamine equivalent?

No. Benzyl placement changes which functional group is available for reaction.

Why is total amine value insufficient?

Different amines may contribute to that value but form different downstream products.

Is this already an oxazolidine additive?

No. It is an amino-alcohol starting material used to prepare particular oxazolidines.
